About the Artist

Marissa Chibas is a performer, writer, and educator who has worked in a wide variety of theatrical forms for over two decades. Her American premieres as an actor include: The Keening, a one woman play by Columbian playwright Umberto Dorado at the American Repertory Theater, The Predator’s Ball, directed and choreographed by Carol Armitage at Brooklyn Academy of Music, Democracy in America at the Yale Rep directed by Travis Preston, Judgment Day by Odon von Horvath at Baltimore Center Stage directed by Jackson Phippin, and Two Sisters and a Piano at the McCarter theater directed by Brian Kulick. On Broadway Marissa played opposite Sam Waterston in Abe Lincoln in Illinois directed by Gerry Gutierrez, and was Nora in Brighton Beach Memoirs directed by Gene Saks. Marissa is on faculty at CalArts and director of the bi-lingual initiative Duende CalArts.

Duende CalArts, dedicated to developing and producing innovative work emerging from Latino(a) and Latin American communities and sources, is an initiative of the CalArts Center for New Performance. Established in 2009, Duende CalArts brings prominent Latino(a) and Latin American artists from the performance community to develop adventurous projects at CalArts Center for New Performance. We aim to expand aesthetic boundaries and performance discourse, collaborating with national and international Latino(a) artists and advancing multilingual works.

CalArts Center for New Performance  is the professional producing arm of California Institute of the Arts, established to provide a unique artist- and project-driven framework for the development and realization of original theater, music, dance, media and interdisciplinary projects. Extending the progressive work carried out at CalArts into a direct dialogue with professional communities at the local, national and international levels, CNP offers an alternative model to support emerging directions in the performing arts. It also enables CalArts students to work shoulder-to-shoulder with celebrated artists and acquire a level of experience that goes beyond their curriculum. centerfornewperformance.org
