SEASON KICK-OFF CELEBRATION | FREE ON-DEMAND STREAMING!
OUT OF ORDER
OCT 05–17, 2021
The 7 fingers :: CANADA
A digital circus where contact is forbidden. Theatres are empty. Artists are forced into the underground. The latest creation from The 7 Fingers, Out of Order delves into the world of these forgotten acrobats clinging to their vocation as best they can amid a post-apocalyptic setting.
This event will be available for on-demand streaming and is not included as part of ArtsEmerson Season Packages.
Iphigenia
NOV 12–13, 2021
Esperanza Spaulding/Wayne Shorter :: uSA
Iphigenia was born to be sacrificed, or so the Greek myth would have us believe. But what if she contested her fate? Jazz legend Wayne Shorter, multi-GRAMMY® winning musician esperanza spalding, director Lileana Blain Cruz, and famed architect Frank Gehry (scenic designer) challenge myth-making and heroine stereotypes in a thrilling musical event that stares down the history of opera and makes some demands on its future.
Zoo Motel
NOV 16–21, 2021
Thaddeus Phillips/Steven Dufala :: USA
Zoo Motel is a live, interactive theatrical event created for the here and now from the studio of theatre director, designer and performer Thaddeus Phillips (17 Border Crossings, Red-Eye to Havre de Grace). Phillips and artist Steven Dufala have transformed their studio into a magical motel room where the audience checks in, time stops, and mysterious and illuminating stories emerge from across the globe.
White Rabbit Red Rabbit
DEC 07–12, 2021
Nassim Soleimanpour :: Iran
No rehearsals. No director. No set. At each performance, a different actor unseals the script and performs it cold. A metaphorical work by Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour, White Rabbit Red Rabbit that dissects power in a wild, utterly original play, turning isolation into global storytelling.
Parable of the Sower
FEB 17–20, 2022
Toshi Reagon :: USA
Returning to ArtsEmerson as a fully realized staged production after its sold-out Concert Performance run in 2017, Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower features music and lyrics composed by Toshi Reagon in collaboration with her mother, Bernice Johnson Reagon. Parable is a triumphant, mesmerizing theatrical work of rare power and beauty that illuminates deep insights on gender, race, and the future of human civilization.
Everyday Life and Other Odds and Ends
MAR 12–27, 2022
Sleeping Weazel :: USA
In this world premiere, playwright and director Charlotte Meehan has created a multimedia theatre/dance piece that brings audiences into the humorous, tragic, and sublime trajectory of Parkinson’s disease as part of family life. From the Boston based theatre company Sleeping Weazel, Everyday Life and Other Odds and Ends highlights the beauty and fragility of the human condition in a way that will seem intimately familiar and brand new at the same time.
Burgerz
APR 13–24, 2022
Travis Alabanza :: UK
After transphobic slurs -- and a hamburger -- were thrown at theatre artist Travis Alabanza, a newfound passion was ignited. They became obsessed with hamburgers: how they’re made, their texture and smell, and, more importantly, the physics of becoming a projectile. One of the UK’s most prominent trans voices, Alabanza uses this interactive solo piece to explore how trans bodies survive, how we can address our own complicity, and find accountability through the humorous and ridiculous.
Sea Sick
MAY 11–22, 2022 | MAY 20 LIVESTREAM
Alanna Mitchell/THE Theatre CentrE :: CANADA
Performed by science journalist Alanna Mitchell and adapted from her award-winning book of the same title, The Theatre Centre's Sea Sick is a powerful and deeply personal solo performance. As Mitchell uncovers the secrets of the ocean and faces the demons of the deeps, she ultimately finds hope that humanity can overcome the threat of climate change to the future of our planet. Following the hugely successful run at Edinburgh Fringe in 2019, this presentation is part of a twelve city world tour featuring stops in Boston, California, Canada, Germany, and the UK.
The Friday evening, May 20th performance will be livestreamed, and that live digital experience will also be available on ArtsEmerson Season Packages.
Public Health Information
With the presence and transmission of COVID-19 continuing to decline in our city and state, ArtsEmerson is optimistic about its ability to open theatres at full capacity, and we will continue to monitor news and data coming from trusted local, state and national public health agencies to enact a plan that prioritizes gathering in a manner that ensures the well-being of audiences, artists, and staff.
We will be communicating more detailed information in the coming weeks. Updates can be found here.
